Meticulous preparation and intricate flavors are wired together at Filigree Coffee’s first brick-and-mortar cafe, which opened in Horizon West outside Orlando late last month.
Above shiny, brew-colored tile fronting the bar, a white La Marzocco GB5 and three Mahlkönig grinders anchor the espresso station, while pre-dosed single-origin coffees also pass through a Weber Workshops EG-1 for careful manual pourovers.
Sunlight pours through the shop’s front windows, brightening light wood shelves stocked with merchandise and retail coffee. In the Hamlin shopping district, the approximately 1,000-square-foot shop pairs pale wood benches and tables with soft white walls and modern pendant lighting, while checkered tile adds energy underfoot. Orlando creative agency Purple Rock Scissors collaborated on elements of the design.
“The goal for Filigree’s interior was to create a modern coffee experience rooted in consistency, clarity and genuine hospitality,” Filigree Coffee Founder Ethan Lenz told Daily Coffee News. “Every design decision was made with both guest experience and operational flow in mind — ensuring the space feels welcoming, intuitive and purpose-built for a high-level coffee program.”
A Fetco XTS batch brewer with a Litmus showerhead helps Filigree hit its flavor-clarity marks in grab-and-go cups. Beneath a cylindrical chandelier, a Marco Font beverage dispenser, a Modbar Steam group and a four-tap setup support cold coffee, sparkling water and rotating seasonal beverages.
“The seasonal menu typically features two to three drinks that give the team space to explore creativity,” Lenz said, noting recent specials such as a Mexican Chili Coquito Latte and an Earl Grey Cold Brew.
Coffees are roasted offsite on a Loring S15 Falcon by Filigree coffee director and certified Q Grader Matt Patch, who also helps guide sourcing through a mix of direct relationships and importing partners. These include direct trade with producers such as Diego Bermudez and Dionel Chilito in Colombia, plus importers such as Osito, Coffee Quest and La Baia.
Lenz said the sourcing focus is on “coffees defined by clarity, transparency, quality and intention, sourced from people and partners who share Filigree’s commitment to long-term relationships and thoughtful stewardship of the supply chain.”
For as serious as Filigree’s approach can be, it’s also not without levity. Filigree’s creative director Chris Ladwig coordinated with illustrator Jay Howell, the original character creator of the popular animated TV show Bob’s Burgers, on artwork for the shop’s branding, merchandise and signage.
“Our goal was to highlight a modern coffee company built on a strong, minimal and timeless foundation, while layering in creativity and color that people could truly connect with,” said Lenz. “By bringing Jay Howell’s incredible artwork into the mix, we were able to add that creative spark.”
Lenz founded Filigree Coffee in 2022 after initially setting out with a small retail cart in 2019 under the name Social Harvest. Through the pandemic, the name change and multiple rebrands, Filigree emerged with a retail pop-up inside the barrel room of Home State Brewery.
Filigree started roasting its own coffees in January 2025 and followed that with the buildout of the cafe next door to the brewery.
“From the beginning, my vision was to build a truly world-class coffee company encompassing every layer of the craft, from sourcing and roasting to cafes, wholesale and e-commerce,” said Lenz. “Looking ahead, Filigree’s next chapter centers on continued growth of its roasting program, alongside expanded investment in education, research and quality development.”
Filigree Coffee is located at 16016 New Independence Pkwy, Ste 110, in Horizon West, Florida.
