Green coffee trading company Volcafe USA has rebranded as Coastal Commodities. The New Jersey-based company said the change better reflects its independent ownership and operations.
In an announcement shared with Daily Coffee News, the company said the change reflects the end of a long-running arrangement with the Volcafe group, not a change in leadership or day-to-day operations.
Originally founded in 1990 as Madison Coffee Company, the trading company entered a long-term commercial arrangement with Volcafe in 2000 and adopted the Volcafe USA name.
“The recent change reflects the conclusion of that long-standing arrangement,” Coastal Commodities Partner, President and Head of Trading Jonathan DeMuria told DCN. “Importantly, this change does not impact ownership, leadership, financing, employees, customer relationships or day-to-day operations. The same team continues to operate the business, and existing commercial relationships remain intact.”
Coastal Commodities, one of North America’s largest green coffee traders by volume, remains co-owned by Jonathan DeMuria, CEO John DeMuria and CFO John Lorenz.
Jonathan DeMuria said the company and its affiliates currently trade approximately 275 million to 280 million pounds of coffee annually through “a range of commercial structures.”
“The business has grown significantly over the past decade and maintains a broad network of global proprietary supplier and customer relationships,” DeMuria said.
The rebranding and structural transition come as the Volcafe group evolves in North America under new ownership. The group, whose coffee activities date back to 1851 under the name Volkart Brothers, was acquired by ED&F Man Commodities in 2004. In 2024, energy and commodities trading giant Hartree announced it was acquiring ED&F Man’s three commodities business units, including Volcafe.
In May 2025, Volcafe named Jason Cortellini regional general manager for North America, effective June 3, signaling continued investment in the region.
In an announcement that recognized “years of partnership and collaboration” with Volcafe and ED&F Man, Coastal Commodities suggested the new corporate structure will allow it to be more nimble in certain operations.
“Trading businesses perform best and deliver the greatest value to customers when the people making decisions have real skin in the game,” Jonathan DeMuria said. “Coastal Commodities brings together the scale and capabilities of a major global trading house with the agility and accountability of an owner-operated firm.”
