Meanwhile, climate volatility raises the odds that new plantings will underperform if coffee variety choices don&#8217;t account for future conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1126\" data-end=\"1174\">Addressing Risk in Farm Renovation Decisions<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1175\" data-end=\"1403\">WCR points to long-running climate research suggesting that about half the land currently suitable for producing arabica coffee could become <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2022\/01\/28\/research-says-climate-change-to-erase-more-than-50-of-suitable-coffee-land-by-2050\/\">unsuitable by 2050<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1843\">Meanwhile, a <a href=\"https:\/\/d73svof8ook8y.cloudfront.net\/resources\/RR_Guidebook_vExecSummary_vfinal.pdf\">2017 USAID guidebook on renovation and rehabilitation<\/a> estimated that approximately 4 million hectares of smallholder coffee farmland \u2014 equivalent to the harvested area of Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia and Ethiopia \u2014 is in need of renovation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1843\">According to an estimate shared by the nonprofit WCR today, governments and supply chain actors have invested approximately $1.2 billion in renovation and rehabilitation in coffee farms over the past two decades, yet those efforts &#8220;have reached only about 5% of the 11.5 million smallholder farmers who urgently need new coffee trees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_194534\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2026\/02\/11\/new-cafeclima-platform-supports-climate-smart-coffee-replanting\/cafeclima\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-194534\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-194534\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/cafeclima.jpg\" alt=\"cafeclima\" width=\"1240\" height=\"711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/cafeclima.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/cafeclima-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/cafeclima-620x356.jpg 620w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/cafeclima-150x86.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/cafeclima-768x440.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1240px) 100vw, 1240px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A preview of the CafeClima web platform, via worldcoffeeresearch.org.<\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1843\">&#8220;The world needs to replace billions of coffee trees. The only thing more costly than inaction is action without insight,&#8221; WCR CEO Jennifer \u201cVern\u201d Long said in an announcement today. &#8220;If the industry invests in planting millions of trees today that cannot survive the climate of 2040, we haven\u2019t just lost capital \u2014 we\u2019ve lost a crucial decade for coffee sector adaptation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1843\">The launch of CafeClima follows a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technoserve.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TechnoServe<\/a> report that <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2025\/05\/13\/technoserve-builds-a-case-for-regenerative-agriculture-investments-in-coffee\/\">calls for a seven-year, $4 billion investment<\/a> from coffee companies and other supply chain actors in regenerative, climate-resilient coffee systems. TechnoServe supported the development of the CafeClima platform, with funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Targeted funding also came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorsofharrogate.com\/\">Taylors of Harrogate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coffeecircle.com\/en\">Coffee Circle<\/a>, according to WCR.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1845\" data-end=\"1868\">What CafeClima Promises<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1869\" data-end=\"2287\">CafeClima is designed to translate climate projections and real-world variety performance data into practical guidance for replanting. The platform draws on WCR\u2019s ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/worldcoffeeresearch.org\/programs\/international-multilocation-variety-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Multilocation Variety Trial<\/a> (IMLVT), a global initiative testing top-performing coffee varieties on research plots throughout the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2289\" data-end=\"2640\">Within CafeClima, users can view localized climate data and projections, identify \u201cclimate analogs\u201d \u2014 places today that resemble a target location\u2019s projected climate in 2050 \u2014 and compare performance results for top arabica varieties across diverse environments.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2642\" data-end=\"3051\">&#8220;CafeClima is a unique decision-support tool that informs climate-resilient coffee combining variety selection with climate information able to reduce future uncertainty,&#8221; Eric Rahn of the Alliance of Bioversity International said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2642\" data-end=\"3051\">The platform is free in both English and Spanish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p data-start=\"2642\" data-end=\"3051\"><em>Comments?
