All images courtesy of Arya Caf\u00e9.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async=\"\" defer=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/proxy.beyondwords.io\/npm\/@beyondwords\/player@latest\/dist\/umd.js\" onload=\"new BeyondWords.Player({ target: this, projectId: 50015, contentId: 'bf0a238e-d93b-4b5f-95c9-b0577f874bfa' })\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Ethiopian coffee and culture is at the center of a new Minneapolis cafe called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aryacafemn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arya Caf\u00e9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the center of the physical space \u2014 a fomer Caf\u00e9 Cer\u00e9s location near Minnehaha Falls \u2014 stands a gold-tiled structural pillar that the owners want to turn into a literal pillar of the community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Customers snap Polaroids, tack them to the pillar and add handwritten notes about where they\u2019re from or their hopes for the future. The business is co-owned by friends and business partners Mohamed and Munir Ahmed, who serves as CFO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was heartwarming seeing that many people from different walks of life just coming together over a cup of coffee,\u201d Mohamed recently told Daily Coffee News.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed said he also spent time talking with neighbors before opening, gathering input from \u201cArya Insiders\u201d on how to best serve the community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2026\/01\/27\/arya-cafe-a-pillar-for-ethiopian-coffee-and-culture-in-minneapolis\/arya-cafe-minneapolis\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-193160\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-193160\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-Minneapolis.jpg\" alt=\"Arya Cafe Minneapolis\" width=\"1240\" height=\"1653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-Minneapolis.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-Minneapolis-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-Minneapolis-465x620.jpg 465w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-Minneapolis-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-Minneapolis-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-Minneapolis-1152x1536.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1240px) 100vw, 1240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the recent federal government shutdown, which <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2025\/10\/29\/coffee-shops-step-up-as-federal-government-ends-food-assistance-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threatened SNAP benefits in November<\/a>, Arya organized non-perishable food donations and promoted mutual aid.<\/p>\n<p>After initially exploring options to become a franchisee, Mohamed said he chose to build something on his own, as he \u201cdidn\u2019t feel comfortable with someone telling him how to dream his dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed, who immigrated to Minneapolis in 2003, said he wanted to create a community hub focused on people and Ethiopian cultural heritage, with coffee being a &#8220;bonus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed\u2019s path into coffee has not been straightforward. His background includes roles in business, healthcare, insurance, restaurants and retail.<\/p>\n<p>While coffee fueled him through it all, his appreciation deepened along international travels that began in 2016, including cafe visits in Turkey, London and Brazil. Pastries come from local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rusticabakery.com\/\">Rustica Bakery<\/a>. The cafe also serves blended drinks, including a popular chai, plus seasonal items such as a date-and-clove matcha.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen the prices of matcha go up regularly, but one thing we\u2019ve done is we\u2019ve kept the prices of our matcha the same,\u201d Mohamed said. \u201cSome other cafes have to do what they have to do to increase prices just due to the demand of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arya\u2019s signature Ethiopian natural coffees are roasted locally&nbsp;by <a href=\"https:\/\/follycoffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Folly Coffee Roasters<\/a>, part of <a href=\"https:\/\/fairwave.com\/\">Fairwave Specialty Coffee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed and Ahmed are also working on adding a brief Ethiopian-style roasting ceremony each morning or afternoon, with a long-term goal of offering classes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2026\/01\/27\/arya-cafe-a-pillar-for-ethiopian-coffee-and-culture-in-minneapolis\/arya-cafe-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-193158\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-193158\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-1.jpg\" alt=\"Arya Cafe 1\" width=\"1026\" height=\"1282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-1.jpg 1026w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-1-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-1-496x620.jpg 496w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-1-120x150.jpg 120w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Arya-Cafe-1-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1026px) 100vw, 1026px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just to get that aroma of the actual beans out there. There\u2019s a visual aspect of Arya that\u2019s there,\u201d said Mohamed. \u201cThe taste is there. Now I want to capture the smell of that to complete that trifecta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed said a second Arya location is planned for downtown Minneapolis near Nicollet Avenue and 5th Street, though an opening date has not been finalized.
