From there they built <a href=\"https:\/\/baobabfare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baobab Fare<\/a>, the East African restaurant that opened in 2021 at the corner of Woodward Avenue and West Grand Boulevard and quickly became a <a href=\"https:\/\/detroit.eater.com\/2021\/2\/19\/22289891\/baobab-fare-east-african-restaurant-opens-new-center-detroit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Center<\/a> anchor and community hub.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"836\" data-end=\"1380\">Since then, Baobab Fare has drawn national attention as a multiple-time James Beard Award semifinalist, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/stories\/the-2025-james-beard-award-semifinalists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025 nod in the hospitality category<\/a>, placing it alongside some of the country\u2019s most lauded dining rooms. The restaurant&#8217;s motto remains&nbsp;\u201cDetroit Ni Nyumbani,&#8221; which roughly translates to &#8220;Detroit is home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"836\" data-end=\"1380\">\u201cDetroit welcomed us as refugees,&#8221; Mamba recently told Daily Coffee News. &#8220;That is important because it became our home \u2014 a place that welcomed us with open arms. And because of that, we have the responsibility to encourage enrichment of the city.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1604\" data-end=\"1651\">From Restaurant to Coffee<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1653\" data-end=\"2007\">What started as a way to serve Burundian coffee alongside sambusa, rice and yellow beans has grown into a full retail and wholesale brand under the Soko by Baobab Fare banner.
