Regulators say the company failed to provide regular schedules, cut hours by more than 15% without consent, denied opportunities to pick up additional shifts and kept workers involuntarily in part-time roles while hiring new staff.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_192760\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2025\/12\/02\/starbucks-to-pay-hourly-workers-35-5-million-in-nyc-labor-settlement\/new-york-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-192760\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-192760\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/New-York.jpg\" alt=\"New York\" width=\"1240\" height=\"827\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/New-York.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/New-York-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/New-York-620x414.jpg 620w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/New-York-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/New-York-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1240px) 100vw, 1240px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">New York City<\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"231\" data-end=\"618\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/about.starbucks.com\/press\/2025\/navigating-nycs-fair-workweek-law-what-it-means-for-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public statement yesterday<\/a>, Starbucks said that while it remains &#8220;committed to compliance&#8221; with the law, &#8220;its complexity creates real-world challenges.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"231\" data-end=\"618\">&#8220;Here\u2019s the reality: Even minor schedule changes can trigger a violation under the law,&#8221; the company wrote. &#8220;For example, if a partner who normally works 20 hours a week calls out for three scheduled hours and we ask someone else to cover that time, that could be considered a violation. The law treats almost any adjustment as a potential issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"231\" data-end=\"618\">According to DCN&#8217;s analysis of past DCWP settlement announcements, at least 13 fast-food companies (including Starbucks) have reached settlements totaling more than $71.6 million in restitution and civil penalties since the New York City Fair Workweek Law took effect in 2017.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"231\" data-end=\"618\">Other companies that have settled include Chipotle ($21 million in combined restitution and penalties), Panda Express ($3.45 million) and Paris Baguette ($2.97 million).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"231\" data-end=\"618\">Complaints about Starbucks\u2019 scheduling practices have escalated alongside a national union drive that began with the first successful store unionization <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2021\/12\/10\/workers-at-a-buffalo-starbucks-store-make-historic-vote-to-unionize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Buffalo, New York, in late 2021<\/a>, and has since spread to hundreds of locations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"231\" data-end=\"618\">DCWP\u2019s probe into Starbucks scheduling in New York has come alongside a wave of unfair labor practice allegations before the National Labor Relations Board and, more recently, an ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2025\/11\/21\/weekly-coffee-news-starbucks-strike-grows-worlds-oldest-barista\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national strike led by Starbucks Workers United<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"231\" data-end=\"618\">Starbucks, which refers to all employees as &#8220;partners,&#8221; has maintained that it is an industry leader in hourly employee pay and benefits. &#8220;It\u2019s a job people choose and stay with,&#8221; the company said. &#8220;Our turnover is less than half the industry average, and every year, more than a million people apply to join us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p data-start=\"231\" data-end=\"618\"><em>Comments?
