All images courtesy of Sid\u00f3h Cafe.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async=\"\" defer=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/proxy.beyondwords.io\/npm\/@beyondwords\/player@latest\/dist\/umd.js\" onload=\"new BeyondWords.Player({ target: this, projectId: 50015, contentId: '2e6a7360-1b94-495b-882a-59c0de0a0097' })\">\n<\/script>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A new specialty coffee shop and roaster called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sidohcafewla\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sid\u00f3h Cafe<\/a> opened in Los Angeles&#8217; Westside neighborhood, giving the Oaxacan immigrant population there a renewed sense of belonging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Celebrating Mexican flavors and culture alongside Mexican-grown coffees and Angeleno pride, the shop co-owned by brothers Marcos and Jason Garcia features a full-wall mural of the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of the people from [that] mountain range live around the area, so it&#8217;s really great to point out, &#8216;this is your mountain,&#8217; and they can point out where their family&#8217;s at,&#8221; Marcos Garcia told Daily Coffee News. &#8220;They really love to tell stories about the different people that they know in the different towns. It used to be a very big Oaxacan immigrant community here. It still is, but not as much as before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Garcia cited rising rents and gentrification as forces driving Oaxacan immigrants, including his own family, eastward into different Los Angeles neighborhoods. Artwork depicting Indigenous Mexican people hangs on the walls, and the cafe menus are painted onto woven corn-husk petates that older generations used as cushions and bedding in rural Mexican homes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People come in and say &#8216;hey, my grandpa has one of those. We still have one of those at the house. We still use those every once in a while,'&#8221; Garcia said. &#8220;So yeah, [the mural, pottery and petates] are the three main pieces that really give the shop life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the menu, cafe de olla, horchata and other Mexican staples appear alongside classic European espresso drinks and a range of breakfast and lunch burritos.<\/p>\n<p>Conchas fill the pastry case down the bar from a 2-group <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2022\/07\/12\/la-marzocco-gives-new-life-to-a-legend-with-the-linea-classic-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Marzocco Linea Classic espresso machine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2024\/08\/05\/fiorenzato-makes-sense-with-new-grind-by-weight-f64-models\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Fiorenzato F64 Evo Sense grinder<\/a> loaded with beans grown on household plots in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, imported by Sid\u00f3h Cafe and roasted in-house on a Huky 500 machine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2025\/11\/18\/sidoh-cafe-brings-oaxaca-home-to-los-angeles\/sidoh-cafe-food\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-192262\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-192262\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Sidoh-Cafe-food.jpg\" alt=\"Sidoh Cafe food\" width=\"1240\" height=\"1860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Sidoh-Cafe-food.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Sidoh-Cafe-food-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Sidoh-Cafe-food-413x620.jpg 413w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Sidoh-Cafe-food-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Sidoh-Cafe-food-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Sidoh-Cafe-food-1024x1536.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1240px) 100vw, 1240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thankfully, we&#8217;ve gotten busy enough to where we use up all of our family&#8217;s coffee, which means that we&#8217;ve had to go to family and friends in neighboring towns,&#8221; said Garcia. &#8220;Specifically, two towns \u2014 San Juan Yae\u00e9 and Tanetze de Zaragoza \u2014 are the two towns that we&#8217;re getting like 90% of our coffee from.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Garcia and family drive down to Tijuana to meet with relatives and friends, have tacos and pick up small quantities of green coffee \u2014 just beneath the threshold to be considered commercial volume, simplifying customs procedures and fees. The hard part is getting the coffee from the mountains down to the city of Oaxaca.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have family that&#8217;ll make the trip, and we&#8217;ve had to reach out to different people and we&#8217;ve been really thankful for the community that&#8217;s helped us out,&#8221; said Garcia. &#8220;It&#8217;s like a five-hour trip just to go into the mountains and get the coffee.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Garcia\u2019s family history in Los Angeles dates back to the 1970s, when his grandfather traveled back and forth for work, staying as much as a couple years at a time. His parents settled permanently in the 1980s, and by the time Garcia was born in 2000, his parents were sharing a two-bedroom apartment with 15 relatives, leading the landlord to insist some move out.<\/p>\n<p>Rents have climbed sharply since then, but when Sid\u00f3h Cafe opened in late May, a force more immediate than gentrification emerged as the primary threat to the immigrant community: ICE raids ordered by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once the ICE raids started happening, everybody was scared to go out. We had two raids at a neighboring car wash two blocks away, so a lot of the community that supported us during the grand opening wasn&#8217;t coming out anymore because the raids were happening super close,&#8221; said Garcia. &#8220;They didn&#8217;t know if they were going to be stopped or not, and with everything going on, we knew we had to do something to show our support. Another fundraiser is being planned, and the cafe also donates hot coffee, fresh bread and food-drive storage space to organizations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/westla.rrn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West L.A. Rapid Response Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As business grows, Garcia hopes to upgrade the roasting equipment while expanding the distribution of Oaxacan coffee throughout L.A.
