All images courtesy of Wonderstate Coffee.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async=\"\" defer=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/proxy.beyondwords.io\/npm\/@beyondwords\/player@latest\/dist\/umd.js\" onload=\"new BeyondWords.Player({ target: this, projectId: 50015, contentId: '3adf4e80-a900-4e8d-847c-c64121a55903' })\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While coffee roasters and retailers everywhere are feeling financial strains, a new profit-sharing program from Viroqua, Wisconsin-based <a href=\"https:\/\/wonderstate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wonderstate Coffee<\/a> appears to have produced favorable returns all around, boosting financial health and cultural capital.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2024, the program covers 80 non-leadership staff across Wonderstate\u2019s three cafes and production roastery. The in-house program follows the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2024\/10\/21\/roast-magazine-announces-2025-roaster-of-the-year-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two-time Roaster of the Year\u2019s<\/a> long-running commitments to sustainable coffee sourcing, including minimum prices for green coffee and a 5% profit reinvestment model.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under the profit-sharing program, eligible employees collectively receive 10% of the company\u2019s net profits every six months. Individual payouts are based on hours worked.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wonderstate Coffee co-founder and co-owner Caleb Nicholes said that the program has opened the company\u2019s books, both literally and figuratively, to positive effect thus far.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The program \u2014 which has not involved changes to base wages \u2014 paid out nearly $45,000 in extra compensation to employees over four quarters from mid-2024 through mid-2025.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_191474\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2025\/10\/29\/wonderstate-coffee-questions-norms-through-profit-sharing-program\/wonderstate-coffee\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-191474\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191474\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Wonderstate-coffee.jpg\" alt=\"Wonderstate coffee\" width=\"1240\" height=\"1860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Wonderstate-coffee.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Wonderstate-coffee-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Wonderstate-coffee-413x620.jpg 413w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Wonderstate-coffee-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Wonderstate-coffee-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Wonderstate-coffee-1024x1536.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1240px) 100vw, 1240px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wonderstate production headquarters in Viroqua, Wisconsin.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe program has created a really wonderful infrastructure for us to be able to have transparent conversations about the financial health of our organization,\u201d Nicholes recently told DCN. \u201cIt really helps employees see where and how they are a significant part of that broader financial outlook.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being \u201cpart\u201d of something greater is one of the many potential benefits of profit-sharing schemes, according to numerous academic studies over the past 20 years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One major meta-analysis from 2019 found that profit-sharing was associated with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/bjir.12483\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small but positive effect on overall productivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to that review, profit-sharing schemes were most successful when combined with complementary practices related to employee satisfaction, such as clear training pathways and increased transparency.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet studies within that same review found that profit-sharing schemes can fail when poorly designed. Pitfalls can include a lack of \u201cline-of-sight\u201d management and unclear payment schedules.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicholes suggested that Wonderstate\u2019s program has been grounded in employee satisfaction, with the broader goal of improving organizational success.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone\u2019s going to have a unique voice on how to help raise the bar in an organization to help make that company more efficient and profitable,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicholes and other company leaders conduct a thorough budget analysis of anticipated annual costs, sales and profit expectations. Ultimately, a portion of net profit is split among current employees based on hours worked. After initially paying out quarterly, leadership shifted to biannual (twice-yearly) payouts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy virtue of the business we have, which is seasonal, some quarters are more profitable than others,\u201d Nicholes said. \u201cAfter having quarters that weren\u2019t profitable, we decided to pay out biannually to ensure that everyone could count on having that payment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet for Nicholes, the payout represents something larger, a broader investment in the company\u2019s culture.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think there\u2019s something kind of magical about that \u2013 how to switch on people\u2019s creative, hardworking mentality to make the place better, more alive and more efficient,\u201d Nicholes said. \u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><i>Comments?
