All images courtesy of Sugar Leaf Coffee Roasterie.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async=\"\" defer=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/proxy.beyondwords.io\/npm\/@beyondwords\/player@latest\/dist\/umd.js\" onload=\"new BeyondWords.Player({ target: this, projectId: 50015, contentId: 'db2f469b-c63b-4d2e-8707-6efec4fcd047' })\">\n<\/script>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A new standalone specialty coffee roaster called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sugarleafcoffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sugar Leaf Coffee Roasterie<\/a> is unfurling from its home base in Milwaukee, with industry veteran Steven Kessler at the helm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Sales of coffees roasted by Kessler on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.probat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Probat<\/a> L12 in a 1,300-square-foot warehouse in Bay View kicked off on March 1 to wholesale clients, regional grocers and consumers online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Over the summer, a larger Primo XR15 roaster joined the production floor as Sugar Leaf&#8217;s primary machine, with the Probat remaining as a backup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">For Kessler, Sugar Leaf represents a first step as a founder and sole proprietor following more than 20 years at other specialty coffee companies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2025\/09\/24\/sugar-leaf-coffee-roasters-sweetens-the-scene-in-milwaukee\/sugar-leaf-coffee-milwaukee-bags\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-190936\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-190936\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sugar-Leaf-Coffee-Milwaukee-bags.jpg\" alt=\"Sugar Leaf Coffee Milwaukee bags\" width=\"1240\" height=\"930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sugar-Leaf-Coffee-Milwaukee-bags.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sugar-Leaf-Coffee-Milwaukee-bags-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sugar-Leaf-Coffee-Milwaukee-bags-620x465.jpg 620w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sugar-Leaf-Coffee-Milwaukee-bags-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sugar-Leaf-Coffee-Milwaukee-bags-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1240px) 100vw, 1240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After entering the industry as a barista, Kessler began roasting in 2006 during a stint in Phoenix, where he worked as both a roaster and a customer-service representative fo <a href=\"https:\/\/espressions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Espressions Coffee Roastery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Upon moving back to Milwaukee, Kessler joined <a href=\"https:\/\/anodynecoffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anodyne Coffee Roasting<\/a> as a roaster, then transitioned to wholesale, where he worked for more than 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I surrounded myself with coffee and [was] around roasters for my whole time in wholesale. I spent a lot of my time actually in the production area, just talking with the roasters and cupping,&#8221; Kessler told Daily Coffee News. &#8220;Granted, when you&#8217;re practically on the drum but then not [really] on the drum, that&#8217;s different. With no immediate intentions to open a cafe, Kessler plans to focus sharply on wholesale roasting and relationships.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At some point, having a flagship store connected to or close by the roastery might be a good thing for [Sugar Leaf] as well. But I&#8217;m more interested in just focusing on helping my customers be successful and working out what I can do to support them,&#8221; said Kessler. &#8220;Most of my career has been on that side.
