2025 Year in Review: 10 New Coffee Shops in the US Northeast

From an Art Deco icon in Manhattan to a comedy club doorstep in Brooklyn, this year’s Northeast coffee shop openings reminded us that great coffee is a welcome luxury anywhere. 

While 2025 was a particularly challenging year for independent coffee shop operators, many of these shops faced it head on, leaning into craft, hospitality and a sense of place.

A few threads run through this list: roasters stepping more confidently into retail, cafes doubling as community hubs and a continued push toward serious food programs. Here are 10 new (or newly expanded) Northeast coffee destinations to visit as we head into the new year.

Obscure Coffee Roasters Shines a Light on Puerto Rican Coffee in Brooklyn

The first brick-and-mortar cafe from three-year-old Obscure Coffee Roasters is open for business in Brooklyn, New York, offering coffees that shine brightly in the cup. Dupont Coffee Collective Brings Continuity and Craft to DC

Workers from a shuttered Washington, D.C. location of Firehook Bakery recently took collective ownership of their former workplace, remodeling it and reopening under the name Dupont Coffee Collective. Fresh paint and new branding help turn the page inside the 1,000-square-foot community coffee shop, where Firehook operated for more than 30 years. New Jersey’s Fair Mountain Coffee Roasters Opens First Standalone Cafe

Monmouth County, New Jersey-based Fair Mountain Coffee Roasters recently branched out from its all-organic roastery with the opening of its first standalone retail cafe.
