Coffee accessories maker Acaia and open-source coffee roasting software company Artisan recently collaborated to create a pair of scales optimized for coffee roasteries, called the Cosmo.
The 10-kilo capacity Cosmo 10 and the 100-kilo capacity Cosmo 100 launched for sale at €500 ($584) and €800 ($935), respectively, via the Artisan online store, with shipping from Europe.
Both scales are designed to feed data wirelessly and automatically into Artisan roasting software applications. The scales can be used for green or roasted coffee measurement, and include an automatic feature for pre-blending.
“The user does not even need to click,” Artisan Co-Creator and Maintainer Marko Luther told Daily Coffee News. “It’s just the interaction with the buckets and the coffee beans.”
The system includes empty bucket recognition and auto-tare features akin to those found in Acaia’s brewing-oriented scales.
The Cosmo 10 measures 20 x 20 x 4 centimeters (7.87 x 7.87 x 1.87 inches) and reports weight down to a resolution of 1 gram. The much heftier Cosmo 100 measures 50 x 50 x 14 centimeters (19.69 x 19.59 x 5.51 inches), offering resolution down to 10-gram increments.
Neither device has its own screen, reflecting a design choice on Acaia’s part to reduce materials. Users can access the live data via apps, while connected devices with a web browser can access a “Smart Task Display,” a graphical display with information on the next task at hand, such as the name of the batch, the batch weight and the coffees to use.
Automatic ratio calculation and a real-time display support pre-blending. When users add coffees to the scale, a feature called Magic-Eye Zoom shows the progress of the final 1% via an animation inspired by the tuning indicators of vintage wooden tube radios from the 1950s.
Cosmo scales made their public debut last month at the World of Coffee expo in Geneva, Switzerland, at a booth shared by Acaia and Artisan. While Artisan will remain the exclusive seller of Cosmo scales in Europe, Acaia Digital Marketing Manager Susie Kealy told DCN that strong international demand for Cosmo scales may result in additional sales channels.
“Due to the high interest from the international coffee community, Acaia is looking into a more global release in the coming future,” said Kealy. “Acaia and Artisan have been collaborating for many years with our technology connection. We look forward to elevating our work together.”
