Coffee-focused scale maker Acaia has launched the Pyxis Black, a small coffee scale the company says reads accurately to the thousandth of a gram.

Measuring 2.55 by 2.55 inches and 0.5 inches thick, the device shows its fine-resolution measurements on an OLED display. The body is aluminum and acrylic with a water-resistant coating.

Launched for sale this month through the California-based company’s U.S. and European websites, the Pyxis Black debuted in September at the SCAJ World Specialty Coffee Conference and Exhibition, where renowned barista Yasuo Ishii used it in his Japanese Brewers Cup routine.

“Acaia’s origins stem from both professional barista experience and ultra-precision laboratory scales,” Acaia Digital Marketing Manager Susan Kealy told Daily Coffee News. “The coffee community is always seeking to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in the cup. We vied to create a product that could be the companion to the most scientifically minded coffee brewer, whether on or off the stage.”

The device features Acaia’s next-generation user interface. Users can customize and store three modes with parameters for time, weight, flow rate, auto-start and auto-tare. Data appears on the scale or in the companion app.

“Pyxis Black owners can customize these to their own workflow and focus,” said Kealy. “Or you can have it just show weight if it works best for you, without rotating through the menus seven or eight times.”

The launch follows Acaia’s largest scales to date — the Acaia Cosmo 100 and Acaia Cosmo 10 high-capacity scales for roasters — which debuted in June at World of Coffee in Geneva.

The Pyxis Black system comes with Acaia’s new Magic Relay connectivity, allowing it to also display data from a nearby screenless Acaia Umbra scale, which also launched earlier this year.

Yet another new Acaia feature called Brew History allows Pyxis Black users to save information locally to track total brews, total coffee consumption and average flow rate. Users can store or skip each session after extraction.

The Pyxis Black has rolled out for $325 in limited production rounds. Future “drops” will be announced via Acaia’s newsletter and social media, and alongside upcoming collaborations with competitive baristas.
