Dutch Bros Coffee is acquiring North Carolina-based drive-through chain Clutch Coffee Bar, according to a public message from Clutch founder and CEO Darren Spicer.

The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Clutch said its last day of business under the Clutch brand will be Friday, Jan. 16, with existing locations closing at 4 p.m. as the company prepares for a transition. An FAQ page regarding the deal says some stores will be temporarily closed during a transition period.

“This was not a decision made lightly,” Clutch said in a letter attributed to Spicer, who founded Clutch in 2018 in Mooresville, North Carolina. “Rather, it comes from a place of deep pride in what we’ve built together, and a belief that this next step will allow the culture, energy, and community-first spirit you helped create continue to grow on an even bigger stage.”

The acquisition provides Dutch Bros with an immediate foothold in North Carolina and South Carolina through a portfolio of existing drive-through units. As of Sept. 30, 2025, the company reported 1,081 coffee shops across 24 states. In a 2025 investor-day release, the company set a goal of reaching 2,029 system shops in 2029.
